Unfired Earth Blocks
Clay-rich earth pressed or extruded into blocks and air dried rather than fired, sometimes with chopped straw or a graded aggregate. Laid in earth or lime mortar for thermal mass and a vapour-open wall, normally on the inside face.

How This Is Made
An Environmental Product Declaration is issued by a manufacturer against a declared unit. This record has neither, so it states sourced facts about process and provenance instead of a carbon figure.
Adobe and compressed earth block, built worldwide; a small current UK production alongside a large stock of historic earth walling
Process
Feedstock
Earth
Clay-rich earth or subsoil, sometimes with chopped straw or a graded aggregate addition; never topsoil
Process heat
Air-dried
Air dried in racks or under cover, not fired. This is the whole difference between this and a clay brick, and it is the thing worth confirming on any particular supply.
Binder
Clay
Fabrication
Workshop-made
Sourcing: Made at a works and delivered, so the earth is local to the maker rather than to the site
Who Builds It
General trade
Rare in the UK
Laid by a bricklayer, but to different rules — earth mortar, no cement, and units that are softer and heavier than they look. Extruded blocks are commonly perforated; pressed blocks are usually solid.
End Of Life
Compostable
Laid in earth mortar, blocks can be taken down, soaked and remade. Laid in cement mortar, or stabilised with cement, they cannot.
Maintenance: Repaired with earth mortar; finished in clay plaster or limewash and left vapour-open
Specification Risk
What a specifier has to resolve before this can be built.
- Certification
- No BBA or Agrément covers the generic article. Compressive strength and moisture data must come from the named supplier, not from the category.
- Fire
- The earth is non-combustible, but a straw addition means no Euroclass classification can be assumed without the supplier stating one.
- Warranty
- A product warranty exists only where a maker is named; nothing attaches to the generic article.
- Insurance
- Warranty providers will want an engineered justification for any loadbearing use — raise it early.
- Supply
- A very small number of UK producers. Lead time and batch size are the practical constraint, not price.
Read This Honestly
- •No figure is held on this record. Unfired earth block is made by named producers, and where one is named a real declaration may exist — the Strocks Unfired Earth Block record carries a third-party-verified EPD. A generic range would not describe any particular block.
- •Not a facing brick. Unfired earth is used internally, or behind a protective outer skin — it is not a weather-exposed external material.
- •Not rammed earth and not cob. This is a supplied, pressed unit; those are walls formed in place.

Design & Specification Notes
Clay-rich earth pressed or extruded into blocks and air dried rather than fired, sometimes with chopped straw or a graded aggregate.
Material Note
The block is pressed and air dried, so there is no firing stage to account for. What has to be established instead is where the earth came from, whether anything was added to stabilise it, and how the wall is kept dry — a stabilised block and an unstabilised one are not the same material.
Typical Uses
- •Primary frame
- •Long-span elements
- •Load-bearing supports
Key Performance
High load-bearing capacity for primary frame.
Specification Actions
- •Confirm the block is genuinely unfired and air dried — “earth brick” is also used loosely for low-fired clay brick.
- •Establish whether the block is stabilised and with what; a cement-stabilised block will not return to subsoil.
- •Specify earth or lime mortar. Cement mortar is harder than the block and will fail it rather than the joint.
Indicative Health & Indoor Air
Unfired subsoil with a plant fibre addition. Vapour-open, and must be finished vapour-open to stay sound.
