Oil rather than paint, on ash and oak as well as the softwoods — the finish that keeps the most of the wood and asks the most in return. A light or dark oil holds off the UV silvering that modified timber otherwise drifts towards; the toned oils push it somewhere else entirely. Recoating every one to three years is the shortest interval in the Vivid range, and the reason to choose it is the depth of the surface, not the upkeep.
