SC902 Intumescent Steel Coating
A one-coat, low-VOC hybrid intumescent basecoat for structural steel, tested to BS 476 and EN 13381 parts 6, 8, 9 and 10 for fire resistance periods up to 120 minutes. Fast curing — touch dry in one hour and shower-proof within one hour — so 120-minute loadings can be applied in a single coat on site or off. Applied to I-section beams and columns, hollow and cellular sections, concrete-filled hollow columns and solid tension rods. Supplied white; the finished colour of exposed steelwork comes from a decorative topseal over it, not from this product.

Recorded Carbon Result
A1–A3 GWP-total per 1 kg of coating (average declaration, 2% product variation)
A1–A3 covers raw-material supply, transport to manufacture and manufacturing. It is product-stage information, not a whole-life result.

Average declaration covering SC901, SC902, SC904 and Carboline Thermo-Sorb HB; stated GWP variation across those products is 2%. Published 2024-05-16, revised 2025-10-02. A4–A5 and B1–B7 are Not Declared. Declared per 1 kg of coating, as published. Converting to kgCO2e/m² of steel requires the dry film thickness for the section factor and fire period actually specified — a project quantity that a palette does not hold. Never add this figure to the steel section figure: the two are declared against different units.

Typical Uses
- •Primary frame
- •Long-span elements
- •Load-bearing supports
Key Performance
High load-bearing capacity for primary frame.
Typical Service-Life Estimate
60 yearsGeneric estimate for early design discussion; confirm with the manufacturer.
Specification Actions
- •Confirm the current EPD covers the selected steel product and manufacturing route.
- •Verify recycled content and the steel manufacturing route with supplier evidence.
- •Calculate transport distances for primary materials.
Indicative Health & Indoor Air
Applied by trained and approved contractors. Consult the manufacturer safety data sheet for handling, ventilation and PPE.

- Fire rating
- Up to 120 minutes fire resistance to BS 476 and EN 13381 parts 6, 8, 9 and 10. The period achieved depends on the dry film thickness applied for the section factor of each member — read from the project loading schedule, never assumed.
