Strocks Unfired Earth Block
Unfired earth blocks — clay-rich earth with chopped straw, pressed and air dried, never taken near a kiln. Firing is where essentially all of a brick’s carbon lives, so removing it changes the arithmetic entirely: the declaration reads −15.4 kgCO₂e per tonne at A1–A3, and even counting the straw carbon back at end of life the whole-life figure is +53.2, about a fifth of the same firm’s fired handmade brick. Used as the inner skin of an external wall, for internal load-bearing walls up to three storeys, and as a structural base to earth floors — not as an external facing brick. Strockettes are a smaller block from the same range, made for repairs to earthen buildings.

Carbon and evidence
Product Evidence
Evidence currently held for the HG Matthews product record.
Recorded Carbon Result
A1–A3 GWP-total per tonne — NEGATIVE only because 65 kgCO2e of biogenic carbon is held in the chopped straw against 48.3 of fossil emissions. That store is NOT permanent: the same declaration returns it at C3 (+46.5) and C4 (+16.9), so whole-life A1–A3 + C is +53.2 kgCO2e/t. Read the waterfall, never the headline alone. Even at +53.2 it is about a fifth of this maker's own fired handmade brick, and the fossil figure of 48.3 is the one that survives any methodological argument.
