Regen GGBS
Ground granulated blast-furnace slag — a by-product of iron-making, ground to cement fineness and used to replace 20–80% of the Portland cement in a concrete mix. It is the single biggest lever most projects have on concrete carbon: this UK average declaration comes to 155 kgCO2e per tonne against 693 for Heidelberg’s own bulk CEM I, so every tonne swapped saves roughly four-fifths of the binder’s emissions, at the cost of slower early strength gain. Whiter than CEM I, so high-replacement mixes also cast paler. Now marketed under the evoBuild name; the declaration is for the Regen product.

Recorded Carbon Result
A1–A3 GWP-total per tonne, UK production-weighted average. For context recorded from documents read in full: Heidelberg’s own bulk CEM I EPD declares 693 kgCO2e/t, so as a like-for-like binder swap GGBS carries roughly a fifth of the carbon. It is a supplementary material — replacement rates in real mixes run 20–80%, and the concrete, not the binder, is what a project actually buys.
Indicator: GWP-total
A1–A3 covers raw-material supply, transport to manufacture and manufacturing. It is product-stage information, not a whole-life result.
