Rock or crushed arisings packed into wire baskets and stacked as a gravity wall. No mortar and no foundation slab in most cases — the mass and the friction of the fill do the work, and the wall drains freely through itself.

Angular quarried rock, site-won stone, or crushed concrete and brick arisings. The cage is drawn steel wire, separately.

The stone is quarried and crushed and needs no heat at all. The cage does: it is drawn steel wire with a zinc or zinc-aluminium coating, and that is where a gabion's process energy actually sits. Recording this as low-processing because it is "stone in a basket" would be leaving out the half that carries the impact.

Cut the wire and the two materials come apart cleanly — stone back to aggregate, mesh to steel scrap. There is no mortar to break out and nothing bonded to separate.
Maintenance: Fill settles in the first year or two and is topped up. After that the wall's life is the coating's life, not the stone's.

- Certification
- The mesh is covered — woven to BS EN 10223-3, welded to BS EN 10223-8, coatings to BS EN 10244-2 — and gabion boxes and mattresses have a European Assessment Document, EAD 200050-01-0102. None of that covers the filled wall, which is designed rather than certified.
- Fire
- Non-combustible stone in a steel cage, but no classification is held for the assembly.
- Warranty
- The mesh carries the manufacturer's warranty. The wall carries the contractor's workmanship warranty and nothing else.
- Insurance
- Retaining applications are an engineered use needing geotechnical design and sign-off; boundary and screen walls are not normally an issue.
- Supply
- Baskets are readily available. The binding constraint is the fill — grading, angularity, and how far it has to come.
Read This Honestly
- •Design life is the coating's, not the stone's. Galvanised, zinc-aluminium (Galfan) and PVC-coated mesh are different products with different lives in the same ground, and the choice follows the exposure. Specify the coating class against that exposure rather than specifying "a gabion".
- •Fill grading is a specification, not a preference. Stone that can pass the mesh aperture will migrate, and the face will slump — fill is normally specified well above the aperture size.
- •Recycled concrete or brick arisings are a legitimate fill and the strongest circularity argument for a gabion, but they are softer and more variable than quarried rock. Durability and appearance both follow the fill.
- •No figure is held on this record. Mesh manufacturers publish declarations for mesh; no declared unit describes a filled wall, and the dominant term is usually how far the fill was hauled.
