Balustrades, gates, railings and brackets drawn out and shaped hot on the anvil by a blacksmith. Tapers, scrolls and fire-welded joints are worked rather than cut, so the section changes along its length in a way fabrication cannot reproduce.

Read This Honestly
- •Forging is additional energy applied to an already-smelted, already-rolled product. Nothing about hand-working reduces the carbon in the steel.
- •The steel stock has an EPD; the finished piece does not. Ask about the stock.
- •Meeting BS 6180 for a balustrade is the specifier’s responsibility, not the smith’s — agree the loading case before the design is drawn.
